Social Media, A New World through Your Hand

What is social media and what makes it unique from other forms of media?

The development of Internet has given several progresses for the development of ways to communicate and interact. One of the developments is social media, a new way to communicate with other people across the borders and nations. Social media, such as Friendster appeared in the late 90’s and then followed by the next social network, Myspace in the beginning 2000s. Social Media can be defined as a new generation to communicate and interact with people around the world and by then getting valuable information and worthwhile news about what is happened in outside the country. This new media has provided chance to people for being friends and connecting with other people by only “click” on their mouse on pad in the computer and laptop.

At the beginning, social media was used more by people to connect with new friends or for some major and independent bands to promote their music, video and updated tour. Let’s check on some major band’s Myspace, like Greenday, SUM 41, or Kings of Convenience. They used to update their tour schedule, the newest songs and music videos. But then, social media is built up more when Facebook was launched in 2004. Facebook then became the world most developed social media and now already has had over 750 million users all over the world. At 2006, another type of social media, Twitter, was launched as one of social media based on micro-blogging. Twitter then became popular because of some official twitter pages from celebrities, athletes or politicians around the world. They share their daily activities, their thoughts about current issues, or several quotes that inspired their life. People can just connect with them by clicking "Follow" or "Retweet". The proximity between the well known people to the world citizen became then closer and closer.

Social media has become a global village whereby all people around the world enable to connect each other and having chats, further conversation or forum. People don’t need to communicate directly face to face; just by clicking a button, they will all get connected. This new kind of media has become also one of channels for globalization. The world became a global shopping mall where people can “buy and sell” their ideas, thoughts, arguments through this emerging social network and multimedia by clicking buttons their gadget.
